When it comes to exploring Ontario why not consider doing so by bike. Cycling will take you thru some of the most scenic spots in the province. Let two wheels and pedalling get you to new places and help open your eyes up to stops along the way that you might otherwise miss. Whether you are interested in meandering recreational trails, rugged mountain biking terrain or paved road riding, there are all types of trails and routes suitable for any type of rider. Many rides are easily accessible, either close to urban areas or near quaint hospitable country towns. Grab your bike... Ontario awaits.

Let your ride take you to a new turnaround destination, or better yet take a tour that includes multiple stops along the way. You can only ride so far without refueling and taking a rest.  Numerous businesses certified as bicycle friendly can be found trailside or close to one of the many excellent route options in featured Welcome Cyclists regions.

The Great Waterway / South Eastern Ontario

The Great Waterway region in south eastern Ontario has a wide range of bicycle routes taking cyclists across the region thru vibrant communities, alongside scenic waterways and to quiet rural and naturalized settings.

Explore from Quinte West, Belleville and Prince Edward County, continue eastward via Kingston and Gananoque, the 1000 Islands and Waterfront Trail, Brockville, the St Lawrence Seaway to Cornwall and the Quebec border. Additional road riding routes north of the lake and St Lawrence, take cyclists to the Rideau Heritage Route, Frontenac Arch Biosphere and connect with routes to Ottawa. Many point to point itineraries are easy completed using Bike Train transportation with VIA Rail.

York and the Ontario Greenbelt

York Region has a number trails suitable for cyclists across the region. On road cycle touring and training routes are popular and attracting growing number of urban cyclists looking for quiet and more scenic paved routes. Additional attractions including mountain biking trails and Canada’s first indoor bike park add to the number of options, making the region appealing to a wide variety of bike riders.

Northumberland and Greenbelt Areas

Northumberland has a wide selection of mapped bicycle routes taking cyclists across the County through vibrant communities to the more rural and naturalized settings in the Greenbelt. There are a number of mountain biking and multi-use trails in forest and conservation areas, plus some great information and map resources to assist with route planning.

"Northumberland is arguably the best region for cycling routes in Ontario,” says Brian Hedney of the Ganaraska Freewheelers. “We have rolling hills and a proliferation of quiet, undulating paved country roads with peaceful views of Lake Ontario and Rice Lake.”

Look for new signs along the Waterfront Trail in Northumberland County, welcoming cyclists.

Exploring the Niagara Region

With its vast network of recreational trails, bike lanes and country roads, the Niagara Region offers cyclists of all abilities an amazing diversity of landscapes, towns, tourist attractions, wineries, historical sites, cultural centres, beaches and parks to explore.

Peel Region and Greenbelt Areas

Peel Region and Greenbelt areas have a number excellent cycling destinations and off road bicycle trails attracting a variety of cyclists. Quiet rail trails through natural and rural areas, challenging escarpment road riding and a variety of mountain biking trails can easily be found with the detail route planning information resources available for this area.

Toronto and Greater Toronto Area

Visitors to Toronto will be pleasantly surprised by its large bikeway network consisting of more than 450 km of bicycle lanes, shared roadways and off-road paths - including the Waterfront Trail. There are plenty of off-road paths and parks to explore for those who want to stay off the city streets.

Manitoulin Island & LaCloche Foothills

Manitoulin Island & the LaCloche Foothills are attractive destinations for both recreational and touring cyclists. On the island, quiet roadways take cyclists past scenic vistas, 108 inland lakes and lush forested areas allowing cyclists to experience unique attractions enroute and connect with the area's rich cultural heritage and First Nations communities. Small towns with an array of amenities and unspoilt shoreline add to the romance of an island getaway easily enjoyed by bicycle.

LaCloche Foothills offers long distance touring cyclists a great opportunity to experience the beauty of the North Channel and nearby Killarney Provincial Park. The spectacular views will make the hilly climbs connecting Espanola to Manitoulin Island worth the effort. Long distance cyclists can connect from this area to Sault St Marie, Sudbury and using the ferry service, to Bruce Peninsula.

Take in the Beauty of Frontenac County

Enjoy cycling on a variety of trails or country roads as they meander past breathtaking vistas, pristine freshwater lakes, vast tracts of lush green forests and spectacular rock formations. Explore the Rideau lakes and historic canals, Land O’Lakes, picturesque villages and as many as 1000 Islands.

Durham Region and Greenbelt Areas

Durham Region has a number excellent regional and cross-regional trail systems and routes. Additional cycling destinations with extensive off-road bicycle trails are attracting a variety of cyclists, including mountain bike enthusiasts. There are various information resources and published maps that cyclists can use to assist with route planning in the region and its Greenbelt areas.

Hamilton and Greenbelt Areas

Hamilton and Greenbelt areas have a wide selection of scenic bicycle trails and routes, thru urban settings and into the Greenbelt areas.

Lush forested escarpment rail trails, with or without challenging climbs, waterfalls and Dundas Valley with numerous cross-regional trail options to connect you to all the numerous cycling options.

Halton and Greenbelt Areas

Halton Region and its Greenbelt areas have a number excellent cycling destinations and bicycle routes catering to a variety of cyclist types. Enjoy mountain biking trails for all abilities, rural road riding with mapped loop routes and the Waterfront Trail Burlington to Oakville and beyond.
