York and the Ontario Greenbelt

York Region has a number trails suitable for cyclists across the region. On road cycle touring and training routes are popular and attracting growing number of urban cyclists looking for quiet and more scenic paved routes. Additional attractions including mountain biking trails and Canada’s first indoor bike park add to the number of options, making the region appealing to a wide variety of bike riders.

Major Off Road Trails

  • Sutton Zephyr Trail (York) – 14km hard packed gravel trail on former CN rail bed, passes through quiet wooded areas following the Black River watershed. Holbourne Road/Hwy 48 to Brown Hill to Sutton.
  • Nokiidaa Trail – 20km of multi use trail with mixed surfaces. Connecting three communities through green spaces, past wetlands and historic cultural sites, and linking to numerous other town trails. Part of Oakridges Trail & Holland River Valley Trail & Rogers Reservoir Conservation Area.
  • Holland River Valley Trail – 4km of trail through valley like setting between Yonge St & Bayview Avenue. Links to Sheppards Bush Conservation area and Oak Ridges Trail.
  • Lake Simcoe Trail – 50km of paved rail trail follows the southern  dge of Lake Simcoe, offering scenic water views and urban cottage mix. Some on-road riding required along Lake Drive.
  • Georgina Island & Nanabush Trails – Take ferry across Lake Simcoe to First Nations Reserve. Ferries depart from Virginia Beach. Island roads plus four short trails with unique learning opportunities, exhibits and wetland viewing stops. www.nanabushtrails.com

Indoor Bike Park

  • JoyRide 150 – Canada’s only indoor bike park. 90,000 sq. ft of fun for all different levels and types of riders. Food, lounge area and more. Bike rentals available.  Location: 150 Bullock Drive, Markham Contact: (905)294-1313 www.joyride150.com

Mountain Biking

  • Brown Hill Tract – This forested area has over 15km of trails suitable for mountain bikers of various abilities. Managed by York Regional Forest it is located at McCowan & Ravenshoe with 2 parking areas and access points.

Cross Regional Cycling Trails

  • Oak Ridges Trail – Portions of the 250 km trail across the Moraine are open to cyclists, as posted. A number of York Region trails are a part or connect to this long distance trail. www.oakridgestrail.org

Established On Road Routes

  • There are many quieter rural roads that are suitable for cyclists with road riding experience and map in-hand. A number of on-line resources are available for cyclists to post and share road riding routes.
